About Hopkins Technology

Hopkins Technology, LLC has been developing software and electronic reference titles since the early 1980s. The company produced its first publicly available CD-ROM in 1988 and is a privately owned business headquartered in Hopkins, Minnesota. Over the years it has offered roughly thirty separate titles to a range of markets, several of which were also made available as subscription products on the Internet.

Our Mission

The mission of Hopkins Technology is to play a part in the continuing digitization of the vast store of knowledge and skill in the world. We consider ourselves an electronic publisher — with personal-computer media (the Internet and CD-ROM) as our format — analogous to the traditional paper print publisher. Where a print house turns manuscripts into books, we have worked to turn reference knowledge into searchable, illustrated, multimedia form.

What We Publish

Historically our focus has been health-oriented reference works. In the retail markets our most popular titles have included an encyclopaedia of Western herbal medicine, a Traditional Chinese Medicine reference, a natural-health encyclopaedia, and a family of diet, exercise and nutrition titles. Beyond health, we have also published titles in science, fine art, travel and geology — reflecting a simple editorial philosophy that good reference publishing can serve curiosity of every kind. You can explore the full lineup on our products page.

The Nutrition Database

For many years Hopkins maintained what was, by our reckoning, one of the largest food-nutrition databases assembled from government and industry sources. We began compiling it in 1989, and much of the data came directly from food manufacturers who supplied detailed information about their products. That database powered our nutrition-analysis software and our free online nutrition lookup tools.

A Commitment to Free Health Information

Just as important as our catalog has been our free health article library — hundreds of plain-English articles on health, nutrition, disease and safety, much of it adapted from authoritative U.S. government public-domain sources. We have always believed that trustworthy health information should be easy to find and freely available, and that a publisher of reference works has a natural role in making it so.

Working With Content Holders

Over the years Hopkins has also produced reference titles on behalf of other publishers and content holders, translating their material into computer-readable, multimedia form. It has been usual for us to hear from authors, institutions and subject-matter experts who wish to see their work brought into digital form for a wider audience.
