The US Bureau of Labor Statistics, Consumer Expenditure Survey consists of: 1) a Quarterly Interview panel survey in which each of about 5,100 consumer units distributed over 100 geographical areas is interviewed every three months over a 15-month period, and 2) a Diary or record keeping survey completed by about 12,000 consumer units for two consecutive weeks. 20% of the sample population is replaced each quarter.
Household income and socioeconomic characteristics are collected in each survey. Interview data include average annual expenditures for housing (& appliances), apparel and services, health care, transportation (vehicle purchases/disposals & trips/vacations), reading, education, food, alcoholic beverages, tobacco, cash contributions, and personal insurance/pensions. Diary data include average weekly expenditures on items such as food, alcoholic beverages, tobacco, personal care products and services, non-prescription drugs, and housekeeping supplies.
